How to Measure for a Barn Door

Measuring for a Barn Door is simple but it's an important step.  Don't assume your opening is a "standard" size.  Due to variances in the opening, flooring and casing, door dimensions can vary.  Measuring will ensure these variances are taken into account.

You'll want to make sure your barn door overlaps the opening to provide a sufficient sound and light barrier.  A and B will determine your ideal door dimensions.  C and D will make sure you have the necessary clearances.  If there are small clearance issues, we can make adjustments to the door size or investigate alternate hardware for your project.

A. Width

The width of the opening should include the casing.  So, outside to outside for width.
If your opening does not have casing, add 4-6" to the width.

B.  Height

The height of the opening should include the casing.  So, measuring from the top of casing to the floor will ensure your door will cover the casing.
If your opening does not have casing, add 2-3" to the height.

C.  Ceiling Height.

Measure from floor to ceiling.  This measurement will be used to make sure you have enough clearance above the casing for a rail, ledger board and hangers.

D.  Wall Clearance

Determine whether you'd like your door to slide open to the left or to the right.  Measure from inside edge of the opening to ensure there is enough clearance for a door to slide open fully.  For biparting configurations, you should take measurements on both sides of the opening.  Ideally, you want an extra two inches but it should be at least as wide as the measurement you took in the first step.
